The public awards for the Super One British Championship were held at the Autosport International Show at the NEC in Birmingham. I collected my award for sixth in the championship of £150. The KF classes were presnted awards by Jenson Button, but strangely the TKM classes were not, despite the fact that Jenson Button used to race in TKM, but perhaps it is best to not go into detail. The show was up to its usual high standards and provided a great atmosphere to present the awards, and make it more high profile than before when it was in a private function room, and not in the main show stand. The top 10 in the championship were as follows;

1. Adam Nichols (903 Points)
2. Steven Welsh (874 Points)
3. Michael Rich (865 Points)
4. Brendan Carton (864 Points)
5. Rhys Jenkins (853 Points)
6. Daniel Rogers (842 Points)
7. Michael West (842 Points)
8. Scott Mitchell (836 Points)
9. Joel Saunders (813 Points)
10. Jake Clifford (812 Points)

The Formula Six South East Championship Presentation was held at Brands Hatch, in conjunction with Race Car Live show. I collected my trophy as champion of the Senior TKM 4 Stroke class, and will be able to run number 1 in F6 if we race in the series again next year. The top 3 in F6 for 2009 were as follows;

1. Daniel Rogers (905 Points)
2. Ryan Fleming (840 Points)
3. Joel Saunders (724 Points)

At the moment we are uncertain which championship we will be doing next year, but it is likely that we will be competing in the Super 1 British Championships and perhaps do the odd round of F6 when its convenient so that I can run my Number 1

Last weekend we picked up my new chassis, which is another Tal-ko, this time its from 2008, and hopefully will gain that little bit extra speed that we’re searching for. The chassis is in brilliant white, which is going to be difficult to keep clean, but the advantage of it being white, is that its easier to spot any cracks, than it is with the darker coloured chassis’. The kart came with the VEN05 brake, which we will test, especially given the problems we have been having with the Magura brake I’m running at the moment. I’m not sure when we will first use it, but we need to transfer everything across from the old kart; we may be able to have it ready for Lydd F6 next weekend.

With the ability to analyse speed and g-forces by using the MyChron 4 with GPS, I took a look back through the data that was recorded from the Super 1 round at Glan y Gors in April. The circuit is extremely physical and had an very long back straight, which required the lowest gearing we’ve ran in a long time.

The top speed was acheived on the back straight and was recorded at 68.9 mph, at just over 11500 rpm. It was interesting to see the raw information as often commentators, tv presenters, etc will make really high claims about the speed of junior classes reaching 70 to 80 mph, when in fact the speed you can acheive on track is nearer 60 mph on an average, twisty track.

In terms of g-forces, the Senior TKM Stroke runs on Maxxis Red slicks, and normally you would expect to acheive about 1.5G, however at Glan y Gors, we reached 1.81G laterally and 0.94G underbraking. I have recorded in the past around 2.3G on tracks such as Shenington however it depends on the conditions.

Hopefully that gives you a rough gauge of the performance of the kart, and the sort of forces that are exerted to it and the driver.

I was asked by Adam Nichols to join him in the Le Mans 24Hr Kart race, which is an anuual event held at the Le Mans circuit in France. The event is a 24Hr endurance race, which would be done in a prokart. Due to the cost of organising the event, the cost to enter one team with their own kart is £1750.00. I would have to fund a quarter of this, due to the team being of four people. Unfortunately the cost was just too high, given all the issues with the cracked chassis recently, and it looks like a new chassis is on it’s way, so I would not be able to afford the cost of this race as well. It would of been a fantastic opportunity, but sometimes things just don’t work out

We sent one of our engines back to Tal-ko to be rebuilt at the end of the Super 1 Round at Glan y Gors in Wales, after the problems we have had with getting speed from it in a straight line. We had decided that it has probably just done too many hours and is in need of a once over. Fortunately for us we had our spare engine to use for the F6 rounds in between getting it back. Tal-ko have been investing a lot of their time in getting the TKM 2 Stroke TAG engine ready, and unfortunately the rebuilding of our engine was delayed, and it looks like we will pick it up again at the next Super 1 round (already run in), and I just hope that it will be as quick as it has been before and we’ll be back up to speed otherwise Scotland is a long way to go for a poor weekend.

A few days after winning the GP Plate, I received an email from Trevor Howell of Venhill Engineering, who are the importers of the Magura Brake system that I have run on the kart for 2008. They wanted to use my success in order to promote the Magura brake. I took it as a big compliment that they recognised my achievements and the extra publicity could not be a bad thing. In return they sent me a new set of brake pads to use for next year. The original press release and images can be found on Venhill’s website, but is also shown below;

Sean Babington and Dan Rogers completed their successful 2008 campaigns with superb victories in the TKM Grand Prix at PFi on 7 December.

Sean has been almost unbeatable in the junior 4-stroke class and added the ‘GP’ plate to his already impressive tally of victories this season – the Super1 title, ‘O’ plate and TKM Festival. All were achieved using the Magura 908.1 brake system.

Similarly, Daniel Rogers won the GP title in the senior 4-stroke class using a 908.1 system and said “We’ve been using the
Magura 908.1 from the beginning of 2008 and I also won this year’s Formula 6 Championship in Junior TKM 4 Stroke with it.”

He added, “I’ve been really impressed with the performance of the Magura; just one a set of pads has lasted us a whole season, which is incredible given its harder, faster braking. This has given me so much more confidence”.

Trevor Howell of Venhill – the UK importers of Magura products – said, “Sean has had an unprecedented year and I’m delighted that he attributes a key part of his success down to the 908.1. What makes it all the better, is that Daniel agrees. The Magura really does
represent a significant performance advantage – not just in the TKM classes but in Rotax, Prokarts and a whole host of other classes.”

For 2009 we will move up to the Senior TKM 4 Stroke class and be competing in the British Championship again. Over the winter we well getting some experience of the senior class by competing in the Bayford Meadows Winter Series. However the chassis we will be using for this Winter Championship is a 2005 Talko S4, which we are not expecting to be very quick, because of its age.

The differences between the Junior and Senior TKM 4 Stroke classes are that the Senior has a higher performance tyre with more grip, more power (19bhp compared to the Juniors 17bhp), and it is heavier (162kg compared the Juniors 140kg). These changes make a difference of about 1 second per lap, depending on the circuit.
