Classic Sports Car Club

After 3 years in the Mazda MX5 Championship, it was time for change. I was unable to put the time into the car that was required to make the car a race winner, and so we started looking for an alternative way of going racing. CSCC Modern Classics offered just that; a 40 minute race format where the driving (and therefore cost) is shared between two drivers who swap during a mid-race pit stop. The grid is made up of a variety of manufacturers from Smart cars through to Porsche and Ferrari’s. I’ll be sharing the driving with my best mate Rhys who I’ve raced with since the we were both about 10 years old.
The regulations are more open in the Classic Sports Car Championship, however in order to be eligible cars have to be of been produced between 1990 – 1999. A class system is used based on engine size in order to make things fairer. My Mazda MX5 will fall into Class G as it is only a 1600. We do have the opportunity to upgrade the car from it’s specification used for the Mazda MX5 Championship however, so more power and weight reduction is on the cards.
We kick off the year with a test day at Snetterton to understand just how quick the car is compared to the competition. I’m anticipating that we’ll need to make several upgrades to the car, and so I doubt we’ll be on the grid before Brands Hatch in May. I’ll keep the list of races that we’ll be competing in as up-to-date as possible. One of the highlights of the year is the final race of the year; a night race at Brands Hatch.
